Oldfern Tuition: Dan Fearnley
I offer tuition tailored to individual customer's experience, based at my workshop in Pickering. I charge £25 per hour for one person, or £35 per hour for two people at the same time. I suggest either a 2-3 hours taster session, morning or afternoon, or 4-6 hours to complete a more substantial project over a full day. Any amount of time could be possible, but it is doubtful much could be achieved in less than two hours, other than a conversation and workshop tour. Most sessions should result in a finished piece of work to take away, with no extra charge for the provision of wood.
Some possible sessions are described below. Other requests can be discussed.
Beginners: A welcome to woodturning session looking at safe use of machinery and tool handling, aiming to complete a very small piece of spindle work and/or bowl turning. Either three hours for half a day or six hours for a full day (with lunch break) to complete a piece of work would be ideal for this kind of session.
Improvers: For those who have done some woodturning but want to improve, a project session would be available to work through tackling a piece of the customers choice (and ability), possibly based on items that can be seen on this website. A full day would be ideal for this kind of lesson.
Demonstration: A private demonstration where one or two people could observe me turning in the workshop with a full explanation of how, why and what is being done, with opportunities for questions and discussion. Not a hands on session , though people could have a go at a particular technique as the lesson progressed.
Customised: I am happy to customise lessons to people's interests - we could make a bowl, a vase, ornaments, trophies, a clock, possibly a small stool, really the choice is yours. We could have a look at decorating items with pyrography or colour if this is of interest. Have a look at our Gallery to see what might be possible.
