The Oldfern Gallery
This page has just a few photos of examples of the turning we have produced.
You can see more by following the links, and even more by looking at our archive website, at archive.oldfern.co.uk
Trophies
We make trophies for schools, clubs and individuals. Two of our most popular are discs and cups. Prices can range from £45 to £250, dependent on the size, type of wood, amount of inscription and logo required, and design. It is very difficult to give a price guide until we have established what is required, but some indicative examples are available. Sometimes we ask customers what they wish to spend, and produce a design to suit the price. More on trophies.
Commemorative items
People often ask for turning to remember a friend or relative by, or to mark a special occasion such as a wedding or birthday. Sometimes this is a trophy, but we have made bowls, platters, cakestands, money-boxes, wall-plaques, gavel and block - and much more. We are almost always asked to pyrograph an inscription on the piece, and sometimes a logo or artwork. More about personalised commemorative items
Artistic collaborations
We have worked with a number of artists to realise their design ideas in wood. Two of note are: ceramic artist Paddy Hartley, who requested a wooden spinning top from which he produced 400 porcelain copies for La Roche's 125th anniversary; Edinburgh artist Penelope Kay, who produced a clay maquette for her genetics related sculpture, The Ageing Muse, which she asked to be turned into a 6 x 10" version in oak. We have worked with other artists - have a look at Artist-woodturner collaborations.
Repair and restoration
We are often asked to re-create worn, damaged or rotten parts for furniture, doors, stairs, clocks, cars, architectural items - once even a set of lawnmower rollers! We have done whole sets of doorknobs and escutcheons for a room or a house, sets of replica newel post caps for staircases, a batch of gearstick knobs for classic cars. If it is round and made of wood we can probably do it. Remember we are woodturners - any metal fitments will need to be provided (or specifications and source given) by the customer. More on repair and restoration.
Small furnishings
We are not furniture makers, but we do create small household items when requested. We have made items such as children's stools, shaker-peg coat racks and key racks, pole-end finials, lamp stands (not wired), pedestals and more. More about furniture
Ornaments
We make a variety of small ornaments - here are just a few, with lots more on the Shop page, and on an additional Ornaments page, as well as the mice and keyrings on the Home page. We try and always have some in stock, but do run out at times.
Something different?
If it's round and made of wood we can probably turn it for you. We have had some unusual requests - for example a unicorn horn, a tap for a beer barrel, a niddy noddy, to name but 3. Get in touch at sales@oldfern.co.uk, we may be able to help.
