Description of work

Malton Grammar School has a long history dating from 1547, but its later and perhaps most successful period ran from 1911 until 1971, which obviously encompassed the two world wars. In 2015 the school commissioned me to create a memorial plaque remembering those students and staff who lost their lives in the two world wars, partly inspired by the centenary of the first world war in 2014, partly by the 70th anniversary of the second world war, and partly by the creation of a new entrance foyer at the School's East Wing, which is where the plaque was installed at a brief remembrance cedremony on 6 November 2015. The East Wing is what was the old Grammar School building. The plaque has unveiled by former student and representative of the British Legion, Shaun Brosnan.

This plaque was turned from sycamore, displaying some attractive grain patterns in the centre, and provided a lighter wood to show the pyrographed writing. Pyrography was used to list the names of the former students and staff who died in the wars. A poppy was carved at the cente of the plaque, dyed red, and a Malton Grammar School badge was carved, pyrographed and added to the bottom of the plaque. The whole was finished with a few coats of mineral oil and then polished with beeswax.
