Description of work

A 14" platter (a shallow bowl) turned from ash forms the base for this pyrographed picture. The subject is the East Wing of Malton School, which was formally Malton Grammar School, built in 1911 on Middlecave Road. This picture was actually taken in 2015, and the wood has mellowed nicely, as most woods do, to a warm orange-brown hue. The original coating of carnauba wax still gives the plate a light sheen.

The platter has a hook on the back, assuming that the picture will be hung rather than displayed flat. In reality it rests on a stand in the entrance foyer of the school.
